The Barony of Dreiburgen is honored to host

Festival of the Rose in conjuction with Dreiburgen Summer Arts

The people of the Kingdom are invited to display their original work for the pleasure of Her Majesty Eleanor and the populace of Caid. Demonstrations and performance arts are also most welcome. The hall will be open at 8:30am for set up of displays.

Dreiburgen will be hosting an Arts Competition to choose Dreiburgen's first A&S Champion.

There will be contests in four A&S Categories:

  • Metal Arts
  • Brewing (non-alcoholic)
  • Woodworking
  • Fiber Arts

Prospective Champions must enter at least three of the four categories. There will be a winner in each category announced. The Champion does not need to win all categories entered but must have the highest cumulative score to become the Champion. Those not intending to become Baronial Champion may enter as few or as many categories as they choose.

Documentation counts as part of the score. One page of documentation is enough, as long as it covers the criteria. Entries will be judged on the same sort of criteria as used in Pentathlon. These are (roughly): What is the entry? How was it used in period? Did you use period materials? If not, why did you choose the particular materials you used. Brief explanation of how you made it and what you learned. Source(s) from which you copied or derived this piece (Bibliography).

Entries should have been finished within the past year and should not have been entered in other competitions (except for displays in People's Choice).

For judging purposes, a total of four entries will be allowed in the A&S contest (one per category). Any additional items may be included in the A&S display.

Classes

Several Classes have been planned for the day. If you are interested in teaching a class please contact . Please keep checking this site for updated class information. Class descriptions will be posted as soon as they become available.

Class Descriptions:

BEADED SCISSOR FOB - 11am to 12 noon
Instructor: Lady Maridonna Dolce da Perugia - Class maximum: 10

We will be making a scissor fob, using wire and beads, to hold a small embroidery scissors.  Kits will be provided in a variety of colors. There will be no charge for the kits, and everyone will go home with a completed scissor fob.

If you have a chain-nose pliers, crimping pliers, wire cutter and/or split ring tool, please bring them.  Those that don't have tools are welcome to share mine.

Experience with beaded jewelry is not required.

BEGINNING CARD WEAVING - 9am to 11am
Instructor: Mistress Aldgytha of Ashwood - 2 hours

Using a continuous warping technique, we will learn to do stripes, checks, diagonals, and diamonds. This is also the warping technique for double-faced and 3/1 broken twill. If there is time and interest, we may discuss these techniques as well. Students should bring a loom, cards, scissors, and four balls of cotton crochet thread (2 of each color).

INTAGLIO CARVING (or, My Jewelry Does Impressions) - 10am to 12 noon
Instructor: Lady Rekon of Saaremaa - Class maximum: 8 - Material Fee: $2 per stone, including starter setting - 1 hour

Intaglio carvings have been used as personal and organizational seals for centuries, from antiquity until the present day.  Learn  about intaglio carving as it was done and used in period, then learn to make your own with slightly more convenient tools. Students who wish to stick around longer to make more detailed or complex work are welcome, as are any who bring their  own rotary tools (mine are Dremels). There will be a handout; there will not be a test.

PERIOD MUSTARD - 2pm
Instructor: Doña Illuminada Eugenia de Guadalupe y Godoy

Mustard was a common condiment throughout the SCA period.  Recipes from period sources will be discussed.  Techniques  used in period to make this pungent sauce will be reviewed. Students will take home a sample of medieval style mustard,
which they have made themselves.

SERVING ON COURT AND GUARD - 11am to 12 noon
Instructor: Mistress Bridget Lucia Mackenzie - 1 hour

SIX-BOARD CHEST - 1pm to 3pm
Instructor: Lord Aulric von Roding - Class maximum: 4 Hands on, No limit for observers. - Material Fee: $10 for Hands on

We will be putting together a box about 8" x 8" x 12" which will be patterned after and use the same construction techniques as  the larger chests I make. The smaller size will allow us to finish in a couple of hours as well as keep the costs down. The class  will be assembling a pre cut kit I am preparing and will be bringing that day. I'm preparing four kits so four people will be able to do the hands on portion of the class but anyone can sit in if they like. The materials cost for those four will be $10.00. Everyone  else will obviously be free.

SPINNING CLASS - 2pm
Instructor: Mistress Bridget Lucia Mackenzie - Class maximum: 7

Patient instruction on spinning with a drop spindle or spinning wheel. A variety of drop spindles available or bring your own. Students will get the hang of spinning, including fiber preparation, carding, handling different types of fiber and plying several spun fibers into yarn.

SPLIT PACK SAXON DIAMONDS (Card Weaving) - 1pm to 2pm
Instructor: Mistress Aldgytha of Ashwood - 1 hour

This is a very simple technique, but students should have a basic understanding of card weaving before taking this class. Students should bring a loom, 18 cards, scissors, and three colors of yarn.
